Gangtey Gompa Trek

This is a combination of moderate and easy treks. It starts from Phobjikha Valley at 3,000m, which is one of the few glacial valleys in Bhutan. It is the roosting place of the rare Black-Necked Cranes which migrate here in the winter from Tibetan plateau in the north. The valley of Gangtey is one of the most beautiful places in Bhutan, where the centuries- old Gangtey monastery is also located. The trek takes you through the villages of Gogona and Khotokha passing through meadows, fields, and forests of juniper, magnolia and rhododendron. This is one of the finest low-altitude treks in Bhutan.


Day 1

Arrival at Paro airport, receive by our guide and transfer to Thimphu, an hour drive with short stop at Tamchog Lhakhang view point. after lunch Thimphu sightseeing, visiting memorial chorten, Buddha Point, Zoo to see Takin, Nunnery view point and later visit Trashichhodzong after office hours(during working days). Overnight in Thimphu hotel.

Day 2

After breakfast drive to Punakha valley(3 hours drive) crossing Dochula Pass at Alt 3130 m from where you could see the long Himalayan mountain range to the north. After lunch visit Chimi Lhakhang-the temple of fertility, and Punakha Dzong, the old capital seat of Bhutan, located in between male and female rivers. Punakha is much lower valley then Thimphu(2300m) at an elevation of 1350m. Overnight at Punakha hotel.

Day 3

Early morning drive northwest of Punakha valley for a short hike to Khamsum Yulle temple(45 mins uphill walk) crossing metal foot bridge and passing by farm land and few farm houses. The view from the temple is awesome, would ebjoy to take pictures of the valley below either sides of the serpentine Mochu (river) flowing down to Punakha valley. After lunch drive to Phubjikha, visit Gangtey Gumba and overnight in Phubjikha hotel.

Day 4

Start of the trek, after breakfast the trekking team would be ready along with the horses to carry your luggages. Starting from Tabitang(3000m), climbing along side the stream to Helela Pass. Camp site at Gogona (3140m). 5 -6 hours trek.

Day 5

Gogona to Chorten Karpo via Shobjula at Alt 3464m, takes about 6 hours, climbing up through the meadow and mixed forest. After the pass, the trail descends to Khotokha valley and passing Wacchey Village, you will be camping for overnight at Chorten karpo (2720m).

Day 6

Days trek would start from Chorten Karpo to Tika zam(bridge) at Chazam, which takes about 5 hours. After little climb to Mulaila Pass(2805m), you will descend through the forest and you will see the vehicle road where your car will be waiting to pick you and drive to Paro via Thimphu. Overnight at Paro hotel.

Day 7

Today will start early for Tiger Nest's hike, which take about 6-7 hours round hike, famously known as Taktsang temple, one of the most sacred holy sites in Bhutan. Later after lunch visit Kichu temple(oldest temple), and free time around Paro town. Overnight in hotel at Paro.

Day 8

Morning drop to Paro international airport for departure flight
